A Journey to Clean Water for Ekerin-Ilewo (Completed October 2024)
Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, yet for the residents of Ekerin Ilewo, this basic necessity had been out of reach for far too long. Contaminated river, unreliable water sources, and the absence of safe drinking water had plagued the community for years, leaving families struggling with waterborne illnesses and an uncertain future. But today, we celebrate the completion of a solar-powered borehole—a project that stands as a beacon of hope, resilience, and transformation.

The Challenge
Before the project began, the residents of Ekerin Ilewo relied on water from nearby streams, which is contaminated due to poor sanitation and agricultural runoff. Children missed school to fetch water, often traveling long distances under the scorching sun. The health toll was devastating, with countless cases of diarrhea, cholera, and other preventable diseases. The community was stuck in a cycle of poverty, all rooted in the lack of clean water.
The Journey
Our water charity embarked on this mission with one goal: to provide a sustainable, reliable, and safe water source for Ekerin Ilewo. The process was not without its hurdles. Geologists conducted surveys to identify the most viable drilling site, while engineers grappled with the challenges of uneven terrain and dry seasons.
The community played an essential role in the project, contributing their time and resources. Men and women alike came together to assist with site preparation, showing a collective determination to overcome the adversity that had plagued them for so long.
The Turning Point
After months of planning, drilling, and construction, the solar-powered borehole became a reality. Equipped with modern filtration systems and powered entirely by renewable energy, this solar powered borehole now provides clean, safe water for over 300 residents. It stands as a sustainable solution, eliminating the need for costly fuel and reducing the environmental impact.
The Impact
The impact of this project has been profound:
- Health Improvements: Cases of waterborne illnesses have drastically declined.
- Education: Children no longer miss school to fetch water, giving them the opportunity to focus on their studies and dreams.
- Economic Growth: Women, who previously spent hours collecting water, now have time to pursue income-generating activities.
- Community Resilience: With a clean water source, the community is better equipped to weather dry seasons and droughts.
A Message of Gratitude
This project would not have been possible without the generous support of donors and the unwavering spirit of the community itself. Together, we have proven that change is possible, even in the face of daunting challenges.
Looking Ahead
While this project marks a significant milestone, it is only the beginning. Our mission continues to bring clean water to underserved communities across Africa. Every drop of clean water brings hope, health, and opportunity.
